PUMI was established in 1983 by five Doctors of Chiropractic, whose goal was to develop a comprehensive set of treatment review guidelines for chiropractic care. Because there were no comprehensive studies of chiropractic care available at the time, the doctors relied upon their collective 150 years of practice experience and information available from chiropractic educational institutions and professional associations.

The resulting treatment guidelines were then used as a foundation for our utilization management software. The software was designed to apply the guidelines based on specific variables unique to each patient including: age, occupation, gender, diagnosis, exam findings, type of onset and pre-existing conditions. Additionally, our database has captured the data of every case we have reviewed. This allows our medical director to audit the performance of the system as compared to proposed treatment plans and make adjustments to the software. Likewise, our quality assurance committee reviews all new studies and guidelines (i.e. ACOEM, Mercy Guidelines, The Manga Report, Rand Study, AHCPR Guidelines, etc.) and makes recommendations regarding fine tuning the PUMI system.

PUMI added physical therapy review services to our software in 1998 through our affiliation with Smart Tracks. Smart Tracks was formed by a physical therapy practice that needed to compete in a difficult managed care market in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota . After reviewing the Smart Tracks treatment guidelines, United Health Care adopted them as their standard for physical therapy services. The Smart Tracks Guidelines have been incorporated in the PUMI system in much the same way that the original PUMI guidelines were used to start our chiropractic system. Online physical therapy review determinations are not available at this time.

PUMI has reviewed over 550,000 chiropractic cases, all of which have been captured by our system. The ever growing knowledge of our system, as well as ongoing consideration of validated research makes PUMI the premier system for chiropractic utilization management.

In response to SB 899 in California, PUMI has trained its reviewing professionals in the application of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Guidelines (ACOEM). PUMI now provides SB 899 compliant review services.
